Here in the valley, the mines did not have whistles, but certainly the trains did. The trains' engineers needed to communicate with the conductors, other personnel, and the public that a train is coming or going! Train whistles fell out of favour when diesel locomotives took over here in the late 1940s / early 1950s and were replaced with very loud air horns!
